Chelsea are in negotiations with AC Milan over a potential move for France international goalkeeper Mike Maignan, as the Premier League giants continue their search for a long-term solution between the posts.

Sources have confirmed to BBC Sport that initial talks are underway, although there remains a gap in valuation between the two clubs. Milan are reportedly holding out for around £25 million for the 29-year-old, while Chelsea are hoping to secure the deal for a lower fee.

Maignan, widely regarded as one of the top goalkeepers in Europe, has been a key figure for Milan since making the switch from Lille in 2021. He signed a five-year deal with the Rossoneri and quickly established himself as a cornerstone of their defensive setup. His agility, leadership, and shot-stopping ability have earned him praise from across the football world.

On the international stage, Maignan has seamlessly taken over as France’s number one following the retirement of long-time captain Hugo Lloris in January 2023. Since making his debut in 2020, he has earned 30 caps and played a vital role in Les Bleus’ campaigns across Europe.

Chelsea’s interest in Maignan signals a continued effort to resolve an issue that has plagued them for several seasons. Since breaking the world-record transfer fee for a goalkeeper with the £71 million signing of Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao in 2018, the Blues have cycled through several options without finding a consistent, long-term starter.

Edouard Mendy, who joined in 2020 and helped the club win the Champions League in 2021, departed for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli in 2023. Meanwhile, Kepa has spent the past two campaigns on loan—first at Real Madrid and most recently at Bournemouth—leaving his future at Stamford Bridge uncertain.

In recent seasons, Chelsea have brought in Robert Sanchez, Djordje Petrovic, and Filip Jorgensen. However, none of the trio have firmly secured the starting role, with rotation and inconsistent performances keeping the door open for further reinforcements.

Petrovic, for instance, spent the 2024–25 season on loan at Strasbourg, while Sanchez and Jorgensen shared time in goal with mixed results. Club insiders believe that Maignan could finally bring the stability and elite presence needed to anchor their back line.

Reports suggest that Maignan is open to a move to Stamford Bridge, viewing the Premier League as the next logical step in his career. His experience in high-pressure matches and leadership at the back could prove invaluable for a Chelsea side under transition and looking to reclaim its place among England’s elite.

With Chelsea actively rebuilding under new management and targeting a return to Champions League football, a marquee signing like Maignan could set the tone for a pivotal summer at the club.

As talks progress, fans will be closely watching to see whether the Blues can agree a fee with Milan—and finally secure the goalkeeper they’ve long been searching for.
